Las Vegas United States History

History

There is no doubt that Las Vegas is relatively young city, being established in 1905, and officially became a city in 1911. This city is proved to be the larges one, founded in the 20th century, and nowadays it is the most populous and capital city of Nevada, one of the states of the United States of America.

The city of Las Vegas is also known under the name “The meadows” and there is a particular historical background for that. In the 1800s areas of the Las Vegas Valley contained artesian wells that supported extensive green areas or Meadows and hence the name Las Vegas, which was given by Spaniards who used the water in that very area.

First Las Vegas was established as a railroad town, what had taken place on May 15, 1905, when 10 acres, owned by Montana Senator William A.Clark’s San Pedro, Los Angeles and Salt Lake City Railroad, were transformed in what is now called downtown Las Vegas. So the town of Las Vegas was part of Lincoln Country until 1909, when it became part of the newly established Clark County. And, finally, it became an incorporated city on March 16, 1911.

In 1928 the government appropriated funds in sum of $ 165 million for the Boulder Canyon Project, a huge flow of those who wished to find a high-paid job rushed in the direction of the future giant. All of them were eager to build the world’s largest gravity dam. It is located 40 miles from Las Vegas and named Hoover Dam. Its construction began in 1931 and this very year can be considered by right to be the year of the establishment of real huge metropolis, which now is one of the biggest ones all over the world. The construction of this dam was finished in 1935, and since that very time it has been a seducing attraction for residents, tourists, seeking to contemplate that giant.

March 19, 1931 is one more memorable date in the Las Vegas history. It memorizes legalization of gambling, what now is the most important feature of the city, as there is no other one all over the world, where all possible and impossible kinds of games, entertainment, and gambling are legal.

By the early 1940s downtown Las Vegas already disposed of several luxury hotels and some gambling clubs, what was of great demand, as a stream of visitors and tourists was really immense.
